Star League’s New Bay Area Director

It is a pleasure to introduce Mr. Hakan Taymaz who joined Star League as the Bay Area Director. He earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees in math and science education specializing in Physics at Bogazici University, Istanbul. Also, he earned a second master's degree in Educational Technology Leadership Program at California State University.

Mr. Taymaz has 8 years of experience in teaching math, science and introduction to programming courses in the public school system. He has worked at Magnolia Science Academy for the last 5 years, as a teacher, a college counselor and an assistant principal. He has also coached Magnolia's math club (Ramanujans) for the past two years and his students got many awards in regional and national math competitions such as countdown winner and 2nd place at MathCounts California State competition last year.

We are glad to have Mr. Taymaz as part of the Star League team, and we hope to continue providing you with the highest quality programs.

Math Prize for Girls 2015 Results

Seventh annual Math Prize for Girls contest was held on September 20th 2015 at MIT. 271 girls from across US and Canada competed for approximately $54,000 in cash prizes.
Rachel Zhang, a 12th grader from Parkway South High School in Missouri, and A-Star Math Winter/Summer camp faculty won first prize and $31,000. A-Star student Catherine (Katie) Wu, a 9th grader at Saratoga High School received youth prize second year in a row which is given to the highest-scoring contestant in 9th grade or below.

A-Star Online Courses Available

Star League is now piloting A-Star courses online to a limited number of students in both Math and Computer Science. Online courses have the same curriculum and class material as the physical courses. The following A-Star courses are available in Fall semester:

  • AMC 10/12 Basic
  • AMC 10/12 Advanced
  • USACO Bronze A
  • USACO Silver A

A-Star Team Training Course

A-Star Team Training course is to train A-Star teams and individuals for some of the most prestigious high school math competitions organized by top universities such as Harvard MIT Math Tournament, Caltech Harvey Mudd Math Competition, Princeton Math Competition, Stanford Math Competition, and Berkeley Math Tournament. There will be 12 training sessions September through April. This course is invitational only. In the past, A-Star teams have ranked 1st place at CHMMC (four times), 1st place at PUMaC, and 2nd place at HMMT (twice). Please achievement page below for more details about past results.

IOI 2015 Results

USA team won three gold medals and a silver medal in the 27th International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI).
USA Team members Andrew He (A-Star Alumni), Alexander Wei, Daniel Chiu received gold medals and Demi Guo (A-Star Alumni) received silver medal. For detailed results: http://stats.ioinformatics.org/results/2015. IOI is the premier precollege competition in computer science. It was held in Kazakhstan between July 26 - August 2 this year (offical website: http://ioi2015.kz/).

IMO 2015 Results

Winning a gold and bronze medals, A-Star instructors Kevin Sun and Bill Huang just came from International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) and taught at A-Star Summer Math Camp 2015.  
A-Star alumni Alexander Whatley was awarded with bronze medals respectively. Kevin, Bill and Alexander were in Canadian team at IMO. In country rankings, USA ranked first after 21 years. For details: http://www.maa.org/news/us-team-takes-first-place-at-international-mathematical-olympiad
