PiMC Information

The Third Annual Pi Math Contest (PiMC) will be held on

  • First Round:
    January 21-29 2017 (see test centers below for details)
    aStar Test Centers, Participating Schools and Math Circles
  • Final Round:
    Saturday, April 29th 2017 from 8am-4pm
    Mission College: 3000 Mission College Boulevard Santa Clara, CA 95054-1897

PiMC  is open to students in 5th grade and below. Regardless of their grade level all students will take the same tests.

First Round

25-question, 40-minute individual test with single digit answers (from 0 to 9).

Contestants will receive 5 points for each correct answer, 1 point for each problem left unanswered, and 0 points for each incorrect answer.

High-performing students will be invited to take the Final Round.

Schedule

 8-9am  Check-In
 9-11:30am  Individual and Team Test
11:30am-1pm  Lunch
 1-2pm  MathMagician Show by Arthur Benjamin / Tie Breaker
 2-4pm  Team Finals and Award Ceremony

Check-In and Team Formation

Students will compete in teams of up to 4 members. Those who would like to be teammates need to check-in together. Otherwise, students will be assigned to a team based on the check-in order.

Individual Test

25-question, 40-minute individual test with single digit answers (from 0 to 9).

Contestants will receive 5 points for each correct answer, 1 point for each problem left unanswered, and 0 points for each incorrect answer.

Team Test

The Team Test is a 20-minute exam consisting of 15 short answer questions.

The entire team can collaborate to complete the Team Test. Different teams may not collaborate with each other.

Teams will receive 20 points for each correct answer, and 0 points for each incorrect answer. No partial credit will be given.

Overall Team Score is the sum of the individual scores and the team test score.

Team Finals

Top 8 Teams based on Overall Team Scores will be invited to compete in the Team Finals Teams will compete in countdown style problems to determine the Champion Team.

Certificates & Awards

All participants will receive Final Round Participation Certificates

Top 30 scorers on Individual Test will receive Medals:

  • 5 Gold Medals
  • 10 Silver Medals
  • 15 Bronze Medals

Members of the top 8 Teams will receive Team Winner Medals

Members of the Champion team will receive Team Champion Trophies.

Award Rankings

Individual Ranks will be determined using the following tie breaking system:

  1. Individual Test Scores
  2. Points received from the last question of the Individual Test, second to last question of the Individual Test etc.
  3. A Tie-Breaker session

Team Ranks will be determined using the following tie breaking system:

  1. Overall Team Scores
  2. Team Test Scores
  3. Points received from the last question of the Team Test, second to last question of the team test etc.
  4. Ranks of the highest scoring student on the team, second highest scoring student on the team etc.

Guest Countries

A limited number of students and teams from other countries may participate in the Finals Round as Guest Countries. They will not be eligible to participate in the Team Finals. However, they may still receive medals based on their Individual and Team Scores which will not affect the Rankings and Medal numbers of the US participants.

Testing

Topics include but are not limited to

- numbers (integers, fractions, decimals, percent)
- word problems - prime numbers and factorization, GCD, LCM
- geometry (angle, length, area, coordinate geometry, 3D)
- counting

To get a better idea about the overall difficulty level, please refer to the tests from previous years.

 

Computational Aids

Rulers and compasses are allowed.

Calculators are NOT allowed!
